Columns have enormous presence that comes at the cost of them taking up lots of usable space. For a more efficient solution that is no less effective when it comes to embellishing entrances, consider the use of our custom pilasters.

For people unfamiliar with the concept, a pilaster resembles nothing so much as a flattened column protruding from a surface. In short, it comes with the same classical elegance as a column but compacted. The easiest method with which to embellish an entrance using pilasters is to put one on each side so as to flank it. However, this is a bit of a waste, not least because pilasters make excellent complements to other architectural woodcarvings. After all, pilasters become even more pleasing to the senses while supporting corbels and standing on bases with wainscoting, so much so that pilasters on their own can seem incomplete in comparison. Of course, these are but some of the possibilities out there. For example, consider pairing pilastered entrances with Romanesque arches, or even use cantons consisting of two pilasters connected at the corner to flank the most substantial examples.
