Part of the problem of cleaning historical and delicate woodcarvings is that it can be damaged easily. Here are some tips for gentle cleaning:

  • Speed up cleaning by using a vacuum cleaner from http://www.bluemountainvacuum.ca. A vacuum with an upholstery brush attachment is a great way to start your cleaning. While it won’t get everything, it will quickly ready the carvings for further cleaning.
  • Use a small, soft watercolor brush to get into all of the smaller spaces. A 4″ bamboo Hake brush can be used for larger areas. Using a cotton bud, such as a Q tip, is not suggested, as it is easy to leave cotton behind.
  • For unreachable areas, try canned air. Be sure to be careful, as canned air can actually freeze any surface it touches, including your skin.
