FROM MAPLE TO MANTLE

This is the story of how a piece of wood becomes something much more…

When people visit our Toronto facility, one of the things that usually surprises them the most is our unique Art For Everyday manufacturing process. Art For Everday is an indigenous company with 100% of its products created in North America.  All our manufacturing is performed in our 50,000 sq ft. facility. It is here that we employ the blend of the latest woodcarving technology with the hand touched care that each piece is given by our master craftsmen.

At Art For Everyday we believe in taking inspiration from the past through hand craftsmanship and historical influences and blending those techniques with state of the art technology and contemporary twists.

Every piece collection begins its life as just a tender sampling from one of our indigenous premium North American hardwood forests. As natural beauty is our core inspiration, the preservation of materials we use and the land they come from is imperative to us. This is why obtaining our Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification and donating funds towards Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification was essential to us.

Wood from these forests is harvested using environmentally sound processing techniques and is then transported to our facility in Toronto. The wood that we use includes nine core species such as Cherry, Maple and Alder but we’ll also import exotic woods for certain bespoke requirements.

Once the wood has reached our design base, its life as a canvas can start. It is at this stage that the grading, inspecting, selecting, and processing of raw lumber begins. The true beauty of our pieces lies in their uniqueness; each piece is derived from the inherent qualities ingrained in the wood itself, this is why the selection of only the best timber is imperative. Using solid wood blocks creates a consistency both structurally and aesthetically, which is demonstrated in the high quality finish that each piece exudes.

Once the best pieces have been selected, each piece is dressed. When dressed, all lumber components are matched for colour and grain consistency. This is one of the most fundamental parts of the entire process; our strict quality procedure ensures that the final appearance of the wood is flawless.

When this has been done the matched-up lumber strips are then glued together creating the master blocks. When the glue has begun to set all the glued-up blocks are loaded into the clamps, compressed and left to set.

It is at this stage that even glued up blocks are squared for further processing. The wood is once again left to further set and dry after which it is moved to the next part of the factory for where it will be cut and its appearance will begin to take shape.

Keep an eye out for our next blog installment to see how we merge old craftsmanship and new technology in order to cut and craft each piece.
