Every so often we are going to focus on one of the fantastic hardwoods that are commonly used in the furniture component industry. This time it’s one of North America’s most famous emblems – the maple wood.
The standard size for most maple trees is 10–45 metres (30–145 ft) in height. Most species are deciduous, with the exception of a couple in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region that are evergreen.
There are approximately 129 species of maple, most of which are native to Asia, with a number also appearing in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. As mentioned above, it is North America where it holds particular significance as it’s a red maple leaf that adorns the flag of Canada.
Most maples have dazzling autumnal foliage, and because of this several countries have leaf-watching festivals. The particularly stunning fall colours of the sugar maple contribute to the colourful tapestry that makes up the seasonal landscape of southeastern Canada.
Some of the larger maple species’ timber is valuable, in particular the Sugar maple in North America, and Sycamore maple in Europe. The timber is often graded based on physical and aesthetic characteristics. The most common terminology includes using a grading scale.
The first is Common #2 which is unselected and often used for craft woods, Common #1 is used for commercial and residential buildings and finally Clear, and Select grade which is sought out for fine woodworking. Some maple wood has a highly decorative wood grain, known as flame maple, quilt maple, birdseye maple and burl wood. This condition occurs randomly in individual trees of several species, and often cannot be detected until the wood has been sawn.
It is for all these reasons that maple is one of most popular Art For Everyday wood. Its cost-effectiveness and durability means for many contractors and designers, it gives more bang for its bark.
