Where to Add Corbels for an Extra Flourish

July 22, 2015

Although corbels started out as functional pieces meant to support other structures, homeowners soon found methods with which to make them more pleasing to the senses. In modern homes, corbels made using carved wood are valued as much for their charm as for their practical uses.

Here are some of the best places to put corbels:

  • Some of the more ornate examples can be used on their own as wall decorations. However, you can increase their appeal further by putting either a candle or another small and ornamental item on top of their flat surfaces.
  • Use them to channel the eye of the viewer to their surroundings. For example, a pair of brackets is a classic method with which to call attention to the cooking range in a kitchen. Match them to their surroundings for a harmonious appearance or embellish them for flair.
  • Beams can be a bit boring, so spice them up with a corbel on each end. Even if neither corbel is meant to support the beam, make sure that it seems capable of doing so for a proportional look.
