Want to Change the Color of Some Wood Accents? Three Tips for Staining

July 21, 2015

A bit of colouring can do much to restore the appearance of wood in your home. Although you might be more familiar with painting, the practice of wood staining can produce better results under the right circumstances. For example, if you have custom wood accents created to emphasize the natural beauty of the material, staining can expand upon that.

Here are three tips to remember as you stain your wood accents:

  • Stain consists of a colorant suspected in an agent such as oil, water, or even alcohol. As a result, it is possible for the colorant to settle at the bottom of the solution when not in use, meaning that you should stir the stain before application. Bear in mind that shaking is not a recommended solution to the problem.
  • Be sure to use the right kind of pre-stain conditioner beforehand to prevent blotches and streaks.
  • Don’t bother with an extra-thick coat of stain because the excess will do nothing but peel off once dried. Instead, give the stain time to seep into the wood before applying a second coat for a richer color. Repeat the process as needed.
