July 22, 2015

When designing a custom kitchen island there is much more to consider than just installing a rectangular cabinet in the middle of the room. Size, shape, functionality, and aesthetics each play their own unique role in influencing the outcome. Here are some tips for designing the perfect kitchen island.

  • First determine what the island’s primary function will be. Will it mainly be used for storage, additional seating, or more countertop workspace? Deciding in advance what the island’s central purpose is should dictate the overall design.
  • Are you planning on including appliances in the island? Depending on the kitchen’s size and layout, often a standard-sized sink or range top are installed on the island. Including a kitchen island prep sink is perfect for a family with more than one chef.
  • If storage throughout the rest of the kitchen is limited, design the island for the maximum in storage space. This is where creative design can play a major role. Use custom island posts to hold adjustable shelving and install decorative mouldings around end cap shelves for holding cookbooks and spices.
