Picking The Right Moulding For Your Home
July 21, 2015
Adding decorative interior moulding in modern design is a great way to add character and unique details to your home. With so many different types and sizes available, choosing the right style can be confusing. Consider these important tips to help you make the best choice.
- Existing Moldings – if you have existing moulding in other rooms, consider the size, style and finish. New mouldings don’t have to match, but they should be coordinated throughout the entire house. To match stained mouldings, use only wood moulding.
- Room Size – large, ornate mouldings and trims can overwhelm a small room, making it feel even smaller. Small, plain mouldings and trims can disappear in a large room. Coordinate your moulding size and style to your room size.
- Ceiling Height – for standard eight foot ceilings, use mouldings 3 – 5 ¼ inches wide. For nine to ten foot ceilings, use mouldings 5 ¼ – 7 inches wide. For ceilings higher than ten feet or vaulted ceilings, create a unique design and large custom moulding with a baseboard trim and crown moulding.
