Not Just Your Ordinary Mantel

July 22, 2015

The fireplace is the natural centerpiece of the room, meaning that it should receive even more care and consideration than its surroundings. One method is to focus on the mantel, which is a prime location for beautification and other renovations.

Use these tips for creating a memorable mantel when it is time to fireplace remodel:

  • A mantel made using a log is well-suited to rustic surroundings that make extensive use of natural materials such as wood and stone. That said, the top half of the log should be sawed off to create a flat surface, which will be perfect for hosting your photos, your accessories, and your other display pieces.
  • On the other end of the spectrum is a wooden mantel that has been embellished using architectural woodcarvings. Although more expensive than its rustic counterpart, such mantels possess a powerful presence that commands the attention of onlookers. This is particularly true if you prop it up on corbels to complete the impression.
  • Using a plain and unadorned wooden plank as a floating shelf can create a most elegant impression. It is particularly well-suited to more modern surroundings.
