A Guide to Refinishing Wood
July 21, 2015
Refinishing wood is a somewhat laborious process. With a little patience and the right tools(read review here), you will end up with a far more satisfying and beautiful piece of furniture than if you simply painted it.
Here’s a brief overview of the process to help get you started:
- Stripping – Removing the old finish is your first priority. You must use a commercially available stripper to accomplish this step. Simply brush it on, wait the recommended time period, and remove with a plastic scraping tool.
- Sanding – This step evens the wood and removes any final vestiges of the original stain. You will need to do this in several stages with a finer grade of sandpaper each time.
- Staining – If you have done the first two steps thoroughly, the wood will be highly receptive to the stain. Brush on the stain in one small area at a time and wipe dry with cheesecloth. For darker colors, repeat this step after the earlier coats have dried.
