Paint Grade Mouldings and Custom Woodcarving Gives Style With Value

July 20, 2015

Many designers may remember the 1990’s very popular paint trend featuring plain white walls with very dark trim. Thankfully, it did not last long, as most homeowners seem to prefer some type of white trim for their interior moldings. While basic white is a perfectly fine décor choice there are several different ways to handle trim and wall colors when working with paint grade moldings. When discussing trim and trim embellishment choices with your clients, give these options some thought:

  • Be creative with your moulding and woodcarving.

Dark Trim, Lighter Walls. Black or dark trim such as midnight blue or chocolate could be just the touch your room needs to provide a little drama. The darker trim will showcase bold architectural features such corbels and capitals. If the room features show-stopping elements, this might be the way to go.
  • Light Trim, Darker Walls. This seems to be, by default, the most commonly chosen trim color scheme. White or light colored molding gives a stark, clean look that will make wall colors pop. Current trends are color combinations from the same family, such as a pale butterscotch chair rail and fireplace mantel against a deep caramel wall.
  • Soft Trim, Soft Walls. If a dramatic statement is not on your client’s list, soft color trims are a good choice. While not as dramatic as black molding, it will still draw attention to beautiful elements such as paint grade moldings, appliqués and medallions. Paint the embellishments a slightly lighter or darker shade than the trim to highlight the details
